I can't find the old bug report about this, but I think this might help solve it. When I was placed in this fight, I couldn't do anything but move and end turn, and after moving for a while, I started getting the monster growls that happen when they see you on the map.

Yeah it seems to be certain spots in Tannis (at least I've only seen it in Tannis) cant generate a map so you get stuck in the void. People outside of the battle can see you like standing on the battle indicator (The one you click to watch battles)
