I feel like the ability to name your mercs would add some extra emersion to this game.

Eh. Nah. Or else next thing will be people asking for us to change their appearance and classes. Mercs aren't supposed to be IC in multiplayer terms anyway, they're there just as a mechanical help, so please by all means try not to grow attached.
