Ensui's damage reduction doesn't seem to work.

I tested both magic damage and standard basic-attack damage with Ensui, and it didn't reduce the damage whatsoever.

I.E. I took 3 damage from an attack without an Ensui, then the same attack did 3 damage with a 6 protection Ensui.

Let me clarify.

Both attacks were resistable, the specific attack I mentioned was a basic attack with a Quarterstaff.

Another test was done with Holy Spark, which did 62+62 before -and- after equipping an Ensui.
