Invention Application-Magi-Alchemical Paint based on common Telegrad Plants - Kavoir - 04-07-2024

Applicable BYOND Key -Kavoir
Request Type - Invention
Request Details -Oil based paints with Special effects for art projects related to what seem to be the base properties of Yama Bind, Shy Snow Flowers, Greyneck Mushrooms and Mandrake.

Specific Details:
The Yama Bind thing works slightly differently and is simpler so I will detail that first. All that is being requested there is to make a general long term glue from it, strong enough to attach rocks or wood to a Canvas.

For the rest its a capacity to distill them down into special paints with the following properties, below I will detail my ideal and then other possible trigger conditions
Shy Snow Flowers: Mild Glow on trigger
Greyneck Mushrooms: Invisible until the trigger condition is met then extremely dark
Mandrake: This is the largest stretch but the capacity to make a shrill noise

The ideal trigger condition for my intention is touch based, when the Canvas is touched some of the persons focus is drawn from them to trigger the effect. Probably in a way that has a sideways relationship with Rune Magic. Ideally if a person has a larger base pool of focus a more pronounced effect would be produced within reason. In the case of the Shy Snow Flower Glow is never going to extend beyond 3 meters and it will never be bright enough to hurt the eyes in a well lit room, but a low focus subject might make a glow that is barely visible.
For the Greynecks: the Black of the newly visible lines would be deeper and the darkness they spread more intense, a strong enough source will have the effect lost on them as they will obscure the entire canvas in darkness but it will not spread past that, where as a weaker pool will simple produce thin dull lines that might be barely visible like pencil shading more then a Spreading Darkness.
For the Mandrake the sound is always the same screech warbling within a few notes of high G but in a familiar pattern. The amount of focus determines the intensity of the sound so in this case have a small pool to draw from is largely an advantage. The Maximum volume is still set at 75 Decibels and it will only carry about 10 meters in open air.

If it makes more sense it might require a simple spell to be cast on the Canvas

Another way to handle it would be a blue potion battery where it is active while partially immersed until the focus is drained from the potion.

Reason why you are making this request (if applicable) - One of through lines for Celeste is an attempt to mix there three primary obsessions(Rune Magic, Painting and Alchemy) and to learn through experimentation in all three.  I wanted to make this request to detail four of their ideas and to see how possible they actually were.

Roleplay & Lore supporting your request - Largely covered by what is directly above and below. She spend her time in her initial period learning what she could from the library, asking anyone she could about magic and gathering plants near Telegrad. She somehow stumbled into being a skilled alchemist so clearly some of it stuck. In terms of backstory she is implied to have spend a lot of time trying to learn from what herbalist she came across.

  • Inspiration for the invention. What made your character come up with this idea?
Studying the common potion formulas in books and the basic properties of the plants. Yama Bind is used for Medical Healing as a binding agent.

Shy Snow Flowers are most commonly used for their capacity to conduct and retain focus, I also remember them being described as specifically a cave Flower but that might be an SL 1 thing if that is the case part of their capacity for dealing with low light environments may theoretically be related to that property to retain and channel natural focus also their natural bright white colour makes them good at reflecting light.

Greynecks are defined by being hard to spot and the potion they refine into is Ghostwalker. They seem a natural fit for making something conditionally detectable and dark. Slipping by unnoticed is their central theme so if you see it as an Artist trying to push that capacity into different shapes is natural

Why are the Mandrakes associated with screaming? Where does that Folk Wisdom come from? Can I exploit it?

  • How the invention works. What does it do, how does it do it, what are its limitations? In addition to what was described above in Specific Details. They still work as basic paints, the principals behind the function are somewhere between runes, nature magic and the fundamental weirdness of Alchemy in setting. It also probably does not refine very cleaning I assume it requires rather a lot of plant matter of the useful type to refine into a single bucket of active Alchemical Paint. Not quite having math for any of the things that exist in game I assume it is about 5 or 6 potions worth to make the active part of the bucket once its been filtered.

  • Existing technology. What within the established lore supports the invention existing as you have described? Mostly the potions existing and the concept that magic can be triggered by touch. And how the plants are described versus the established potions that they make

  • Development time. How long have you been working on this IC? Do you have logs or screenshots supporting your claim?
In theory they have been missing with Alchemical plants to produce art since their first appearance which involved Hidden Violets and is partially covered In Telegrad-Pings from October 15th of 2022. I don't have a lot of screenshots but you may know of the lovely little art trough near the Pond East of Telegrad City. ICly they have always had a connection to the plants of Telegrad and like experimenting with their capacities. Their time off was implied to have been spent learning Rune Craft in a more practical manner then just having read about it and refining their skills with Alchemy if that helps.
This is less an application for having this done and more a request to know how future experiments to attempt to create this stuff will go and if there is actually anything here to pursue. We only have a vague shape with test tubes and jars as a window into how Alchemy is conducted so if there is an obvious reason it would fail I think Celeste would have noticed by now. Although if your fine with them having accomplished it I suppose that just means her first onscreen experiments are a success.

I hope I filled this out right and that combing them rather then making 4 separate posts was correct.
